Strong grain and steel shipments fueled a 5% increase in cargo moving so far this year through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
That strong shipping season came during the first year Sarnia Harbour on the St. Clair River had been owned and operated by the city after it took over responsibility for the facility in March from Transport Canada.
"We've had a pretty good year, so far," said Peter Hungerford, the city's director of economic development and corporate planning.
"We didn't have the benefit of a lot of detailed records from Transport Canada, in terms of past usage," he said.
"But our sense is that we've had, I'll say, at lease an average year, if not better than average, in terms of the number of ships that we have coming in and out."
Approximately 30 ships have stopped at the Cargill grain elevators in Sarnia so far this year, he said.
Hungerford said the seaway reported 3,452 transits through its system through the end of November this year, compared to 3,511 during the same period in the previous shipping season.
